Club Dinner
2008
The 32nd Annual Cryptic Dinner was held at The Westminster Arms on Friday 22nd February 2008. All nineteen Cryptics present managed to sport the club colours on an evening filled with the usual booze-fuelled banter.
A handful of the puppy’s photos can be found below. The only man without a club tie is Irish pub landlord Jerry whose hospitality was at least as warm as the food.
Rod soaked up the kiwi-baiting alone with uncharacteristic good humour and some pointless mutterings about one day cricket. Much wisdom was dispensed by the mature quartet of Andrew, Atkinson, McLoughlin and Mousinho. At the younger end there was wedding talk in equal measure. Messrs Cupit, Dyson and Scott all take the plunge in the coming months making 2008 unquestionably the Year of the Shorty. Nick Benham is on the way too.
Skipper Goss took to after dinner speaking like a duck in a Cryptic scorebook, highlighting a few moments from 2007, many of which involved his own bowling being smashed out of sight. He got away with moderate heckling and finished off by awarding the Man of the Year Trophy to PAJ Andrew, who appears in most of the club records, and not only because of his monumental work in creating them. Share Peter’s obvious delight at the award as seen in the last photo.
All the while the puppy’s shutter snapped away, but cameras can be cruel in such situations so the gallery has been massively edited. The absence of Big Jim the piper and Jimmy the singer left the evening bereft of music, but somewhere on Europe’s ski slopes there must have been a jingling bell or two.
